Are you looking for a futon mattress to go with your futon sofa bed?

You’ve reached the right place.

Futon sofa beds are a great way to provide additional sleeping space without having to buy a full-size mattress and bed.

This is a great option if you have limited space or need temporary sleeping space.

A futon sofa bed may not be as comfortable as a regular bed, but the right futon mattress can ensure that you and your guest are well-rested.

This is the Futon Mattress Buying guide

This buying guide reviews the best futon mattress you can purchase.

We break down what they are, how firm or soft they feel, their cost and where you can buy them.

You can find our top-rated luxury foam beds and our budget foam mattress if you’re looking for a traditional mattress.

DHP is one the most highly rated and popular futon mattresses. This innerspring futon has a foam comfort layer, and a soft polyester covering.

The coils are encased in a protective shell that provides a great combination of firm support and soft contouring. They are designed to wrap around your body and prevent pressure points.

It is only 20cm thick and feels very supportive, even for heavier users.

The foam padding acts as a cushion between the coils and the cover. They won’t dig into your skin.

Although the cover cannot be removed, a quick spot-cleaning should remove any stains and spots.

Futon mattresses are more aesthetic than traditional mattresses. They are often used in common spaces like the living room.

DHP offers a half-dozen color options: black, brown charcoal, cobalt and merlot. You can choose the one that matches your decor.

Only the full-size DHP futon mattress can be purchased.

The warranty is for one year.

DHP is not recommended if you’re looking for a futon that you can use daily. The futon doesn’t stand up to frequent use. It starts to wear and the springs can pop.

It is a great guest bed that can be used occasionally.

Cons

  • It is not durable, especially if it is used daily and not as a guest bed.

Futon mattresses are usually made of foam, most often memory foam. ButClassic Brands recommends this futon mattress in 20 cm for those who prefer an innerspring mattress that is firmer and more bouncier.

It is made up of wrapped coils and a plush, 3 cm polyester microfiber top.

The Classic Brands futon, despite not having a thicker comfort layer is very comfortable. It is described as being firm but soft by many users.

This is the effect of wrapped springs. This futon is a good option for larger-bodied people because it provides more support than memory foam.

They contour to your body so you don’t feel any firmness or uncomfortable lumps.

Innersprings have another advantage: the futon will not lose its thickness, which is a problem with foam futons. It will remain comfortable and supportive for many years.

Futon is finished with a quilted microfiber covering. You won’t feel the coils beneath because of the 3 cm thickness.

The seller suggests wiping the cover with a damp cloth to keep it clean.

Classic Brands futons are only available in full-size.

It can be used on any futon sofa or frame. It can be used as a traditional mattress by being placed on a box spring or foundation.

There are two options for aesthetics: brown and black.

This futon mattress is one-sided and cannot be flipped.

The warranty is for one year.

You can also flip the futon mattress over to Serta Cypress.

It is an innerspring mattress, similar to DHP and Classic Brands. It is made with Bonnel springs, rather than the more comfortable and common pocket springs.

It is still very comfortable. Even for heavier sleepers, the springs provide excellent support.

Two layers of CertiPURfoam 3 cm thick are used to sandwich the springs. You won’t feel the springs on any side of the mattress because the foam is inert.

Serta calls to wrap the foam and springs in a cotton-polyester blend coverCottonique. It is soft, breathable and durable.

The cover is held in place by nylon tufting and the inner layers are not moved.

Serta suggests that you fluffing your mattress every now and again to keep it comfortable and extend its life span.

You can choose from a Queen or Full Serta Cypress futon bed. It is also available in khaki or green as well as black or gray.

Cons

  • When new, a mild chemical scent.
  • It won’t last as a daily mattress.

The Mozaicfuton mattress is a great choice if you prefer innerspring mattresses with a soft, plush feel to memory foam.

It is made up of memory foam wrapped with a cotton twill covering. It is medium-firm and comfortable. It will sink slightly but not to the bottom.

It only has one layer of memory foam, so you can choose which side you prefer. To increase durability, flip it and rotate it every few months.

It is gel memory foam, not any ordinary memory foam.

The cooling gel infuses the mattress with heat-resistant properties. This gel helps to dissipate most body heat from the mattress.

An innerspring futon mattress is best for hot sleepers. The Mozaic gel memory Fouon mattress is a great option for hot sleepers who love the feeling of memory foam.

The cotton twill covers also help with moisture-wicking and breathability. It’s also super soft.

Mozaic mattresses are 20 cm thick. They are available in full-size only.

It will take a while for the mattress to expand after it is unpacked. It will have a mild chemical scent similar to all-foam mattresses at first. It will disappear in a few days.

Eight colors are available for aesthetics. These include some brighter options like red, hunter green and khaki. You also have a few neutral options, like ivory and black.

Cons

  • This is not the best option for people who are overweight.
  • When new, it has a mild chemical scent.
  • A Japanese futon (also known as a shikibuton) is intended to be used on the floor and not on a futon frame. To provide additional cushioning and ventilation, it is placed on a Tatami Mat.

If you don’t have a futon frame or futon sofa bed, a Japanese futon would be a great option. It is usually thinner than traditional futon mattresses and can be folded and stored in a closet for when it is not in use.

The Luxton Home Japanese Shiki Futon is our favorite Japanese futon.

This 6-inch polyester-filled pad is available in a variety of sizes: a twin (99 cm x 21 cm), full (140 cm. 211 cm), or queen (211 cm).

You might be wondering if a mattress 6 cm can be considered comfortable.

It is for most people. We don’t recommend it if you are obese or have a larger body. The floor or mat beneath will feel warm.

It may not be comfortable enough to use every day.It is recommended for guests who only use it occasionally.

It can also be used as a meditation or yoga mat.

    Pros

    • Most people find it comfortable.
    • Comfortable for tall sleepers
    • Versatile can be used alone, as a topper or as a yoga mat.
    • It is easy to fold and store.

    Cons

    • This is not the best choice for those who sleep heavier.
    • To puff up to full size, it takes at least three days

    Futon Mattress Buying Tips

These are some things to keep in mind when looking for a futon bed.

    Materials

Futon mattresses are made of either foam, polyester, and cotton. Some blend cotton and polyester.

These mattresses are soft to medium-firm and great for those who like a plush mattress.

They aren’t supportive enough to support overweight sleepers.

Futon mattresses can have an innerspring interior, instead of foam. To cushion you from the springs, most innerspring futon mattresses have a coil or pocket with thin foam padding at its top.

The best innerspring futon mattress is for most people. These mattresses offer a unique combination between support and contouring.

You will find an innerspring futon mattress that is comfortable regardless of your weight or sleeping position.

These springs are ideal for heavier sleepers. They provide more support than foam.

The innerspring futon mattress lasts longer and doesn’t lose its thickness. An innerspring futon mattress can last for 3-5 years if used regularly, while a similar foam-only futon mattress will only last 1-2 years.

    Comfort & Support

No matter what futon mattress you choose, it will not be as comfortable as a full-size mattress. Don’t compare them.

However, this doesn’t mean that all futons should be uncomfortable.Futon mattresses can be as comfortable as beds if they are of high quality and have a sufficient thickness (20 cm ideally) and use the right materials (good foam or innersprings).

Comfort is subjective. When choosing the best futon mattress, your personal preferences are important.

A memory foam mattress or a polyester-filled futon is a better choice if you prefer softer mattresses. An innerspring mattress is a better choice if you want firmer mattresses.

Support depends on how much weight you have.

A standard foam mattress or polyester futon mattress is best for you if you are less than average or in the middle weight range.

An innerspring futon mattress is the best choice for those who weigh more than the average (over 91kg). You are less likely to feel it sag over time.

    Western Vs. Japanese Futons

The best option for most people is a western-style futon mattress. It’s the one that covers a futon frame. It can be folded to make a sofa or unfolded to become a bed.

This futon mattress is ideal for replacing the futon sofa mattress or a futon frame.

A Japanese futon is a good alternative if you don’t have a futon frame or have limited space in your house or apartment.

Japanese futons have a minimalist design. This futon mattress is usually placed on the ground on a Tatami mat.

A Japanese futon is thinner and lighter than a Western-style futon mattress. It also has no foam in it so you can easily fold it up and put it away when not in use.

A Japanese futon may not be comfortable for those who are overweight. Its 2-8 cm thin profile doesn’t offer enough support.

    Size

Decide how big a futon mattress is necessary.

It will all depend on how big your futon frame is.Futon mattresses come in full-size sizes, as do most futon frames. However, you can also find smaller twin and larger queen sizes.

Futon mattresses are 20 cm high.

Futon Mattresses Are Bad For Your Back?

Futon mattresses can be very good for your back, provided you choose the right one. Futon mattresses can be used every day to relieve back pain.

Avoid back problems by knowing your sleeping requirements and choosing the right mattress for you.

You may need to sleep with more support if you are heavier than average. This means you should consider an innerspring futon mattress.

Futon mattresses are not as durable as traditional mattresses. It can affect your comfort and cause back pain if you leave it for too long.

You should replace the futon mattress every 3 to 5 years depending on its quality and durability.

Are Futon Mattresses Really Worth The Cost?

It all depends on the purpose of the mattress. A futon mattress is best if you intend to keep it in your guest room for occasional use.

If you intend to use the futon mattress as a regular mattress or sofa, don’t buy one. It will not last for more than a few weeks before it starts to sag, pop or tear.

Even if the futon mattress is more expensive, it’s worth it. You’ll save money in the long-term.

    Futon Mattresses: Care And Maintenance

When you purchase a futon mattress, the first thing to do is buy a cover. This is particularly important if the mattress is going to be used every day (as a couch or bed).

Futon mattresses don’t have removable covers. It is not possible to remove the cover for washing. Spot cleaning may remove some dirt, but it does not provide the same hygiene as a washable covering.

A removable cover protects the futon from dirt and makes it a cleaner, more comfortable place to sleep.

    Additional care tips include:

    • To kill germs and eliminate stale odors, air the mattress in the sun.
    • Futon mattresses need to be fluffed regularly in order to retain their comfort and puffiness.
    • To even out the wear on a futon mattress with two sides, rotate it every month.
